Fluttering and dancing in the breeze

The words in my title are not by me, but by the English poet William Wordsworth. When I look at the daffodils in my garden, and think of the poem, I can see that Wordsworth did a good job. He captured the way daffodils move in the breeze, beautifully.  They have their heads down, away from the wind, and they sway, like they are dancing. They have a certain elegance too, with their long and slender stems.

Daffodils make excellent cut flowers. Before you combine them with other flowers, I advise you to put them in the water separately, for about 24 hours. The juice the plant exudes, won't poison the other flowers any more.

But of all the qualities Daffodils have, to me, the most important one is the happiness they bring. With their cheerful ruffled cups, the only thing you can do is love them.

Next week I will take you to my garden once more, to give you an update on the spring cleaning we did, in and around the garden house, and to show you the flowers that are in bloom. Some tulips are ready to open up, so with a bit of luck.......

Have a good week.

Love,

Madelief x

I wander'd lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretch'd in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: -
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company!
I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

  1. Lieve Madelief,

    liefs,

  13. All so very beautiful dear Madelief - the flowers, the garden and of course you sharing it all with us!

Wordsworth's poem was drilled into us at school in England of course - now I appreciate it so much more! Daffodils played an important roll in my childhood - both in my parents' garden where we grew many, and in the entire town where I lived between the sea and the farmland - daffodils grew everywhere and meant Spring had definitely arrived.

Madelief, hope you will stop by my post today - all the lovely the azaleas are in bloom and had a good shower in yesterday's rain making them look so pretty!

    Hugs - Mary

I so love this poem. We need more ethereal poetry these days. Lovely my dear, and thank you for your eye that sees spring eternal!

  15. Madelief, I can tell how eager you are to return to your garden. Those daffodils have signaled the start of a season of beauty. I completely agree with you about their being very Happy Flowers!

May I also wish you a very Happy, if a bit belated, Birthday. The cake that you showed us in that previous post is a gem! You made me laugh at the toothbrush method used in the cake's decoration.

Here in NYC, our weather alternates between spring into summer, followed by a winter resume, with occasional snow flurries. Climate change is with us, I believe, and wonder what it's effect will be on our botanical friends.

  17. I have to tell you that your photos take my breath away. I don't know how you manage to get such stunningly bright color and make the most romantically beautiful little bouquets with such a simple choice of flowers.. You have recited my very favorite Wordsworth poem. Have you been to his Dove Cottage or Rydal Mount, his home once he gained his fame? They are located in Grasmere in the Lake District in Northern England. There you can walk through his garden. The estate is still owned by the family who open it in the summer for tourists. I dream of visiting there when the daffodils are indeed dancing. Loved this post. Both of my visits were in June, well past the daffodils.
