On my knees

Hurray! After days of hoping, checking the weather forecast and a growing amount of biennials on my balcony, ready to be taken to the garden, I could finally get on my knees and start planting.

I found a beautiful spot for my blue and white lupins, replanted the foxgloves and daisies I grew from seed and got rid of dozens of seedlings of the beech tree and elder tree.

Most plants survived the winter. Even some delicate roses I feared for. I hope my Dahlia tubers will get into growth again. I took a risk leaving them in the ground, covered with leaves and pine needles.

The garden house feels damp inside. There is a layer of mould on the shelves. I will probably have to give them a new layer of paint. The window sills and floor are covered with all sorts of dead insects. Algae have taken over the greenhouse. We will have to give it a good scrub, so that the we can see through the glass panels again. Terracotta pots are waiting to be filled with violets & pelargoniums.

Crocuses are enjoying the first rays of sunlight and colourful shoots pop up everywhere. Daffodils are on the brink of opening, so are the blossoms on the trees. Spring arrived at last. I picked my first bouquet to take home with. The hellebores look elegant on our mantelpiece in a blue and white Delftware vase.

A lovely weekend to you all! They say the weather is going to be perfect for gardening. If you are looking for me, you know were you can find me :-)

Love,

Madelief x

  1. Lieve Madelief,

Even the dampness in your sweet little summer house and the dead bugs and the layer of pine needles and leaves over the dahlia tubers - oh, GARDEN! There's work to be done in mine, too! But, alas.... other things on the agenda. It's kind of funny but, part of me just wants to stay home!

  53. And Hurrah for YOU, Madelief! Your pictures are stunning - how DO you do it? - and bring cheer and solace during this terribly grey early spring. Yes, we have had some wonderful sunny days but I say the dozens of glorious magnolia trees in Tours city centre yesterday and noticed sadly their blooms were not as pink as usual. We have flowers everywhere, and we are lucky for that, but the skies do not echo their fervour for spring.

I love that first picture! The colours are perfectly harmonious and so very you :-)

It is full of the joyous photography of beautiful nature that i know I will find here. However, this time you also let us into your garden house, letting city dwellers like me have more insight into what is required to make a garden house glow, what is required to get the new growing season off to a fine start after a long winter.

I so appreciate your true garden view!

Over here in NYC, it seems as if warmer weather is gradually reaching us. I may soon cast off my wool jacket. The down coat is no longer needed. No more gloves...and maybe no more hats either until October. I so look forward to my next walk in Central Park.
