Season of mist and mellow fruitfulness

The words in my title were borrowed from the poem To Autumn by John Keats. In this poem Keats captures the essence of autumn. Have you seen the film 'Bright Star' by Jane Campion? It's about Keats's short life and love. If you haven't, you should. It's almost as poetic as Keats's poems. You will love it!

It's amazing to see how quickly nature changes. Two weeks ago my garden was still green. Only one week later part of the foliage has turned into shades of brown, red and golden.

When I entered the garden last Sunday, it all looked a bit hazy. It felt like walking through a thin layer of mist. The grass was soaking wet and covered with the first leaves of the Hazel tree.

The hosta's and ferns are slowly wilting away, but the Dahlia's, Cosmea, Rose The fairy and Rose Coral Dawn are still in bloom. The asters are flowering abundantly. We have not done a lot of work in the garden lately, so it was high time to put the spade into the ground and start digging.

The flowers beds were cleared, the greenhouse was emptied and the pink and purple tulip bulbs, which I bought more than a month ago, were finally put into the ground.

After some serious contemplation I decided to get rid of the gladioli bulbs which I planted last spring. They are just not my thing. Although I like a garden that looks a bit wild, gladioli are a bit too much for me. They have been all over the place, except upright :-)!

It was delicious being outside and forgetting everything around me, while taking in the colours and smell of autumn.

Have you done any work in the garden lately?

Enjoy your weekend!

LOVE,

Madelief x

Ik vind de bladeren die verkleuren prachtig. Vorige week een wandeling in het bos hierachter gemaakt met de kleintjes en daar zie je de veranderingen ook met de week..

Ik wens je een heel fijn weekend.

  8. Hello Madelief
Oh I love this poem and I am rhyming it as I write

    Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
    With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

Your garden looks divine at this time. You look so beautiful and sophisticated as you bury your tulip bulbs.

I always felt a touch of sadness as I put the garden to bed and counted the days till springtime

  13. To be able to go into the garden and still pick a bouquet like you did must be heaven Madelief. That's the garden I'd love to have but I don't and never will unless we'd move. The soil, too much shade,.... It's just a different garden we have here with not the typical summer blooms and no possibility at all for flowers from seeds. Hydrangeas do well here though and luckily they give colour during summer and fall but it's not the ideal plant to cut bouquets from I've experienced over time. This year we didn't have much bloom even from the Hydrangeas but I still managed to pick a bouquet at the right time to dry the flowers and that has been in the house for quite a while now but I prefer fresh flowers and more colours and a greater variety of flowers. Working in the garden isn't that easy. The soil is soaked already again but I did plant more Frittilaria as they do well in the wet soil. I would love to plant tulips but I don't. They can't stand wet soil. I normally do plant them into containers but after this year's disaster because of the late frost, I haven't planted any yet.
Thanks for the tip about the movie.
    Bye,
    have a lovely weekend,

  14. Dearest Madelief,

Hah, you too love Gardena tools! Great brand and you always spot those colors when left somewhere. You still got some cut flowers from your garden. Yeah, now it shows that you are two months ahead of us as we have still all the leaves on, barely turning. All week we have had around 28°C and sunshine. We need rain, Pieter had to use the sprinklers. The summer gave plenty of rain but now it's too dry. At least you can plant tulips and enjoy them. We gave up on them. They get eaten by voles and it's too hot here. Only the first year we had hundreds of Mount Tacoma and Angelique tulips.
    Hugs to you,
    Mariette

  15. Autumn really is the season of mist. I always thought mist was Dutch and it was translated 'fog' in English. So when I saw it in your title, I had to know what the difference was. It lies in the density. Mist becomes fog when visibility is one kilometre or less. Learned something again. We've had both mist and fog over here lately ;-)

Hello Madelief:
Yes, how quickly Autumnal mists seem to have descended upon us and the gardening season draws to a close for another year. And, what an amazing collection of flowers you have still been able to gather from your garden to bring the last fireworks of the year indoors.

'Putting the garden to bed' as we used to refer to our activities at this time of year is filled with nostalgia as one looks back on plants that have performed well or have been a disappointment. But also, it is a time for promise and hope. Of bulbs planted to bloom some months later, of plans for even more glorious flowering displays, of new colour schemes, of a garden reborn once again. And, most importantly, it offers a quiet opportunity for reflection on those things in life which really do matter and for the simple pleasures that make life so totally wonderful. Our thoughts and love are with you.

Madelief a lovely mellow post and what a beautiful bouquet you managed to find at the end of the season...
Today I wandered through my garden and breathed in the heady scent of Wisteria, admired the Lilac and checked to see which of my roses would be the first to flower. I am waiting patiently secateurs at hand........I love picking flowers to bring indoors. I ignored the weeds allowing them live and prosper for another week when I will have to time to deal with them.
Spring is putting on a wonderful display.........enjoy your Autumn.

  52. Hello, Madelief! I have been absent from blogland for several weeks, now. I, actually, think this is the first time that I haven't, at least, seen that there were blogposts to hoard until I had a moment with a cup of tea.

and, part of the reason is that I've been trying so hard to get into the garden. Usually, in the beginning of October, there are some warm, summer-like days, but, this year, it seemed to rain right straight through September and into the middle of this month. By the time I did get out, I was afraid that it would be miserably cold but, even though it was blustery, it felt so wonderful to be out in the dirt with a shovel, again! =]

One of the things that I, too, love about this time of year is how the ferns turn golden ....and the blue of the asters - both in the garden and in the wild - is a favorite thing for me!

So, I'm wanting to hang on to time outdoors but I'm, also, feeling a tremendous desire to nest in my home.... here comes Thanksgiving!
