Gardening book giveaway

It was cold and rainy in the garden today. After a stormy week I decided to check if the roof was still on my garden house and the glass panes of my greenhouse weren't smashed by big branches which had fallen from the trees. The damage was minimal. A few terracotta pots were broken and my rain pipe had come loose. It could have been a lot worse.

In between taking photo's and doing some work in the garden, I warmed up to an ancient bathroom stove I found in a thrift store years ago. My late husband rewired it and since then it functions perfectly. I am so grateful to have it. On days like this when it's only two degrees Celsius, it's necessary to warm your hands and feet now and then.

I was amazed to see that there are still roses in bloom. Not one or two, but a whole bush. There are catkins on the hazel tree already and several plants are making new shoots. Somehow it's reassuring that after these dark and cold autumn and winter days, spring will arrive once more.

I am not sure if you remember, but a few weeks ago I promised to do a giveaway. Callwey publishers kindly permitted me to give one of their gardening books to you. It's called Besondere Frauen und ihre Gaerten. The book is about some well know and lesser known German ladies and their gardens. The photography is beautiful.

If you are interested, please say so in your comment. Keep in mind that the book is written in German.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

Love,

Madelief x

  2. Lieve Madelief,

  3. Hello my friend! It's amazing how much beauty you can find in a garden that is closing down for winter. That heater looks like a good one.. and I love the candles lit in the window. We still have a rose bud out in our garden but it seems frozen in bud-state. Enjoy your week ahead! ((hugs)), Teresa :-) Oh.. and I'd love to be in the giveaway!

    Liefs, Gerry

  7. Your garden still looks wonderful Madelief despite the stormy weather. Am amazed to see you still have pelargoniums outside, I've had to rescue mine and bring them indoors as we've had a dramatic drop in temperature here over the last couple of days. I would love to be included in your giveaway please. Have a great week. Jane xx

  9. Your photos are wonderful, I love this autumnal weather (last week, we still had 20 ° C, it was really too warm for November), but you know I love the rain ! I am glad that the storm did not do damage to your garden. Take time to enjoy the seasons, spring will come in time ... We had a great need water here, everything was very dry, rivers levels were very low.
    This book is very beautiful,

  10. Dear Madelief, How lovely to have those pink roses still blooming in your garden patch. I don't know if the rosebuds that have formed on my rose bushes will open as we are headed for some chillier weather (-5) this week. The heater looks cozy and would be most welcome after working outdoors. I'd be interested in the gardening book. My parents still speak/read some German, and photos translate in any language!
    Have a wonderful week.

  24. Hello dear Madelief, thank you for your lovely comments on my last post! I don't think my daughters liked being on my blog, so I probably won't post photos of them again. It's been terribly cold and windy here in England. The weather has definitely changed. Your roses look lovely. My ice berg roses are still giving me the odd flower and the cosmos is flowering despite the harsh weather. Enjoy the week! Sharon x

WOW, you harvested quite some stunning roses in the end of November!
Love those heart warming photos and what a blissful fact to have that bathroom heater still warming your hands! With loving and fond memories of Jan who readied it for you, to warm up to it many times...
Happy that you had minimal damage.

  29. Thank you for your beautiful photography and stories of pottering around the garden. I also love to see your tables set for friends over to share cake and tea. I know it must take a lot of time to post such insightful texts - thank you. I'd love to be included in the drawing for the garden book. I lived in Germany as a child and work to keep up with my language skills. It would be a treasure to read, translate and enjoy this book.

Have a lovely winter season . . . your roses are amazing. One thinks that as much as you enjoy seeing them, they must also be reluctant to say good-by for another year.
