Ready for winter

Lucky me to for having no appointments today. With a blue sky, mild temperatures and bright sunlight, it was the perfect weather for working in the garden. I still had to plant the tulip and alium bulbs, and that's exactly what I did. Because I am not the sort of person to plant neat rows of tulips in the same colour, I tossed the ones that I had into a basket and put them in the ground at random. Let's hope they will give me a pretty tulip field next spring. It will definitely be a surprise!

Cutting of the water supply turned out easier than I thought it would be. One of my colleagues told me how to do it and within five minutes all the pipes and the toilet were drained. The garden and the little house are now ready for frosty nights.

Before going home I picked all the flowers I could find: some dahlia's, roses, chrysanthemums and zinnia's. It will be a long wait until spring, but I look forward to spend some time indoors, baking and cooking and visiting museums and concerts. I even picked up my crochet needle after a year to start a new project and finish an old one.

Wishing you all a good week!

Love,

Madelief x

  1. Lieve Madelief,

Groetjes,
    Hetty

  3. Ah dear Madelief - your beautiful garden will remain lovely throughout the winter - being established and surrounded by such pretty landscaping, and the garden house itself, winter can only continue dressing all in its own special ways, dried seed pods and bare trees to me are so beautiful.

Your flowers, still so colorful and lush, will continue to light up your home for a while, mixed in with your adorable jugs and pots. Come Spring, those bulbs will give amazing color. Today I'm heading into my garden to get a little work started also - I have tulip bulbs to plant, mostly going into pots though because the squirrels dig them out of the ground. I cover the pots with landscape mesh for the winter then remove once the bulbs pop up later! Will there be snow? Our predictions here are for a very cold winter - I personally love the colder weather.

Happy days - soon we'll all be so busy with the holiday season so will be leaving the garden to fend for itself - indoors is lovely in winter and soon we'll prepare the hearth and home. We burn wood in the fireplace, my favorite part of winter despite the dust it makes, haha!!

Take care - enjoy each day and be surrounded by warmth and love. I think of you and send blessings.

  12. Hi Madelief your garden is still looking pretty for this time of year. I replanted my tulips and hyacinths, but I hope they will flower as I took them out the pots after they died down in late Spring. I've now put my name down for an allotment near me, but the waiting list is 3 1/2 years! So in the meantime, I thought about volunteering at the allotment and getting some well needed gardening advice at the same time as doing some digging! Wishing you a lovely week ahead! Sharon x

  13. Dearest Madelief,
Glad you did manage to cut off the water supply in order to have no pipes frozen up and bursting during winter.
For sure you will not at all visit the entire winter, no need for it anymore... Still lovely flowers for a farewell nosegay in a vase.
Enjoy your cozy time at home with crochet projects!

  20. I was also busy in the garden today. Weather was still sunny and very mild for November and there was still enough to do. I am always suprised the following year when the first tulips are coming out, because I do not remember what and where I planted them the year before! I am sure it will be a wonderful colourful picture in your garden next spring!

  22. Good evening my fine friend.....I LOVE your style of planting. You are randomly putting these bulbs into the ground, trusting that their beauty will create a new patchwork next spring that will surprise. I know it will! And getting the little shed ready for winter...oh the season is upon us! Tonight we are waiting for at least 12 inches of snow to fall into tomorrow noon. They may delay school for a few hours which is fine with me!

Lovely photos of a gracious garden memory...

  33. Hoi Madelief

    Lieve groetjes, Eefie

We've had a touch of frost the past few nights and the dahlias are finished, but I did bring in a few last blooms for the dining room table.

  38. Such lovely, vibrant flowers to finish up the gardening season - a sweet treat for the eyes! It is nice to have a little surprise in the spring with random plantings, too. I always forget what I plant! I have been digging and planting all week and my shoulders ache, but it is worth it to have a little joy to look forward to. So nice to have good advice for closing up your water supply - broken pipes are no fun! Wishing you a pleasant week enjoying your blooms! xo Karen

  48. Dearest Madelief,
your garden still looks very colorful and beautiful - not really like a "November Garden". And you could find a lot of fine flowers and take them home. The surprise tulips will also be a source of joy in the next spring - how good that your garden is bringing good feelings for such a long time in the year! And until that happens, you will fulfill your needlework-, baking-, cooking- ans museum-projects. I really can see, you and your garden are ready for winter. (I myself am not quite ready for the winter like you - a part of my soul is still in the Caribbean Sea ;o))
Warm hugs and lots of good wishes to you,
