A wet day at the flower show

Wearing our walking shoes, thick jeans and fleece jackets, my husband and I set off for 'Huis Bingerden', early on Sunday morning. Bingerden is a privately owned estate in the eastern part of Holland. In the third week of June, the grounds are used for an annual International plants fair. Specialist nurseries from Holland and the neighbouring countries are present. This year the theme was 'creepers and climbers'.

My husband and I were among the first visitors to arrive. Stall holders were still walking around, getting everything ready for opening. The weather was horrible; strong winds, low temperatures and torrential rain. We had to run to the first pavilllion insight, otherwise we would be soaked to the bone.

Despite the bad weather lots of plant enthusiasts turned up to see what was on display. Lectures were held and even a plant auction. I took a moss rose called 'Belinda' home with me. It has a beautiful bright pink/red colour and is slightly scented. I also bought a lovely baby blue Hydrangea, of which I simply cannot remember the name. Hope you all had a good weekend too?!

Happy Wednesday!

Lieve groet,

Madelief

  2. Hello Madelief:
What a pity that the weather was so bad for your visit since, inevitably, it dampens the spirits and makes looking at everything quite difficult.

Nevertheless you have captured some wonderful images of both the setting and the fair. The topiary frog by the small pool is great fun and the long border filled with dusky pinks and blues is so very attractive.

The scones look absolutely delicious. A scene replicated in English gardens countrywide for afternnon tea. Lovely!

  15. Liebe Madelief,

Oh what a pity the weather was wet, but so glad that you came home with a beautiful rose and hydrangea.
I especially love the way the raindrops are sitting on the pretty pink rose. The scones and hot tea in pretty teacups would have been a nice way to warm you up.

  23. Hoi Madelief,

    Liefs,

    Mariette

  29. Oh Madelief,
What a beautiful garden and, very English I think. ........ and, your photographs are beautiful. We have quite a few garden shows here in the UK and many 'open gardens' and, it is such a shame when the weather is inclement. I'm sure that you still enjoyed it though and I always love it when you can buy plants to take home and plant. Your rose and hydrangea sound lovely and will take their place beautifully in your lovely garden.
PS: I LOVE that first photo.XXXX

Also, I will admit, nice to see that we are not the only ones having so much rain this season! but even the storms have their beauty as I tried to show in the last posting I did on the orange clouds here at Gardens at Waters East. Beauty everywhere, wouldn't you agree? jack

  34. Dear Madelief, I do think that gardens look much better for the rain. Everything is greener and the colours more defined. But in any case this is a beautiful garden which calls for white linen and sun hats!! From the beautiful gardens that you show us it seems that you are truly a nation of very fine gardeners.

It looks very much like the kind of place we visit. Not just NT properties but privately owned homes, some even give tours of their homes. We hope to book a couple of tours for when the weather improves :-))))

We have had thunder and hailstones today ...!

  38. The flowers in the first picture of this post quite took my breath away! I do love a beautiful colourful mixture of garden flowers in a huge bouquet like that. We went to a garden in the rain too last weekend and it does make it a bit difficult to wander around in the usual way - but there are raindrops on roses and on other flowers and leaves to photograph so there are some beautiful compensations! I loved seeing this garden very much - such a splendid house too. And I would have enjoyed the scones on the rosy plates...Have a happy weekend.
