A dream come true?

Imagine winning 18 million Euro in the lottery. What would you do with the money?! Give part of it to your children, other relatives or charity, buy a house in some beautiful far away place or perhaps purchase that Hermes bag you have been wanting to call yours for ages?

That's what Jocelyn, a 46 year old housewife and blogger from Arras, with two grown up children, a difficult husband and a small haberdashery store, had to think about.  It has always been a fantasy of hers to be fashionably slim and become a stylist in Paris, where she would meet her knight in shining armour. Will she change her life in pursuit of her dreams, make a list of her desires?

If you would like to know how the story goes from here, I can recommend the latest book by the French author Grégoire Delacourt, called 'De lijst van al mijn wensen' in Dutch or 'The list of my desires' in English. I was pleasantly surprised!

I had to get used to Delacourt's style of writing. It's quite 'floral', as we used to say in Holland. Almost like poetry. It made me realise how difficult it must have been to translate it from French into Dutch. The translator did a good job.

The book is charming and absorbing. Jocelyn an amiable character, who you wish all the happiness she deserves.

A great compliment to Grégoire Delacourt, for describing Jocelyn's thoughts and feelings perfectly. Quite remarkable for a man ;-)!

If you like, you can read more about the book on the following blogs. They are worth having a look at.

The photo's that accompany this post were made in my craft room. I found the teacups and plates on a flea market recently. The vintage Easter cloth was given to me by a dear friend. A big kiss to you Ilse!

Happy weekend!

  11. Hello!Delightful images, as ever! An that story! 18 million pounds! What would I do with it? The obvious things that one would do. Some of it I would give away, as it really would be more than I could spend in my lifetime. But... to be honest... before I do that... I would go out and spend like mad! I would buy a lot of beautiful things... I do love jewellery, so I would add to my collection... shoes... lots of truly expensive shoes and handbags. I would buy a collection of all my favourite fragrances, then paintings, lots of beautiful antique furniture and then I would stop and think... and be sensible... maybe...
Sorry I didn't sound like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but I like beautiful things, so that was the first thing I thought of!

Your new work room looks so pretty,
Fin and I often have this conversation about if we won some money, we decided after treating the children we would buy our dream home, but then we would have to have a cleaner and house keeper, and good ones are so hard to find, and would I like someone going through my knick knack's ?
So we decided it was too much hassle!!!
    Happy Week

  30. What a lovely colourful post, dearest Madelief - and what an interesting thought: What would I do with 18 Millions?! I think I would set up a fund; with the rates that arise each year at such a large sum, you could always re-finance new projects. (I think such self-help projects for women / families in very poor countries are eligible.) Also, I would travel, travel, travel - but more comfortable than at the time: o)) Thank's for the book-tip! Sounds worth reading.
I hope you will habe a WONDERUL blogger meeting with your friends from Rotterdam and from Canada! Enjoy it!!!

  34. Madelief, thank you for your kind comments over at my place. It's still pretty chilly here in New York, too, and I'm definitely still wearing my collection of crocheted hats (one at a time, mind you!) I'm delighted that you are enjoying the one I made for you.

Interesting to think about what might happen after a major lottery win. I don't buy any such tickets anymore, but do remember a time ...perhaps over 20 years ago, when a friend and i used to buy an occasional weekend lotter ticket...just for the entertainment factor.

When I find myself watching late night local tv news programs where various winning lottery numbers are announced, I play a silly, sleepy game, just saying a number just before the winning number is announced. I a totally amazed when I find I've uttered even a single number. Mostly I guess not a one. This silly, sleepy form of entertainment comes without any cost!

The teacups you show here are lovely...much bright colors than those I usually favor, but I do like their designs.

  52. Hej Madelief,

  62. Talk about alluring titles... ;) Another post that I had come to but just couldn't absorb the words. Sorry about that! But, they were loud and clear, this morning! Fascinating! I don't want to wait to read the book, I just want to say, "SO?!!! What happened, next?!?!?!?"

and, of course, I love all the wash of pretty images floating in front of my eyes! Those dogs are SO CUTE! I think that I have a stitched table runner that is almost exactly like yours (sans Easter eggs) that we got for our wedding! =) I've always been afraid to use it, though. =/ =)

Oh, so much to do, now.... need to do a little bit of laundy, cut the last boy's hair and get clothes ready to pack! It's a bit of a daunting task because all of the summery clothes that we need are put away and, now, I will have ALL of the clothes out at once because we're a mish-mash of seasons! Sounds like a mess, to me!!! =O

    Wish me luck! ;)
