Sun, sea & blue skies

Dear blog friends. I hope you don't mind me writing in English only, but it saves me so much time not writing in Dutch as well!

Only six more weeks to go and spring will be there. We seem to be getting very little sun in Holland. Sometimes when a rare sunbeam is coming through the clouds, I am at work and cannot go outside. Yesterday I was browsing through the pictures I made in Normandy last year and found these beautiful seascapes. They make me long for blue skies, small white clouds, a gentle breeze and summer dresses. Just a few more months to go....In the meantime I will just have to do with my photographs.

Eve, is a very sweet blogger friend of mine, who lives in a small village in Germany which she calls 'little Gallia'. On her blog she tells us about her life in the village, her dog and other stories that fill her head. Eve has a very lively imagination and she tells her stories in a special way, which is full of fun! She is just an amazing storyteller. And the winner is....

Wat is het toch leuk om iets weg te geven. Na anderhalve week kan ik eindelijk de winnaar bekend maken van mijn giveaway. Achteraf duurde het mij veel te lang. Jullie reacties waren overweldigend! Ook mijn aantal volgers is enorm gestegen. Ik kan bijna weer een giveaway organiseren ;-)! Misschien is dat een schrale troost voor diegenen die nu niet in de prijzen vallen...

Het is mij helaas niet gelukt om bij iedereen een berichtje achter te laten. Excuses hiervoor, maar het ontbreekt mij gewoonweg aan tijd. Bij deze alsnog bedankt voor jullie enthousiaste reacties!!

Mijn dochter Annebelle heeft vanochtend de winnende naam getrokken. It is so much fun to give something beautiful away. After one and a half week I can finally announce the winner of my give away! Your reaction was overwhelming. I still cannot believe I received more than a hundred replies to my give-away. Even the amount of followers has risen to over a hundred and forty. It won't be long before I can organise another give-away ;-). Perhaps this is a slight consolation for all of you who did not win this time....

My daughter Annebelle picked the winning name this morning. It was my intention to send the parcel to Timbuktu if necessary, but I was very surprised to read that the winner is from my home town!!! Snowy winter

Aan de rand van Schiedam ligt, verscholen tussen hoge flatgebouwen en nieuwbouw, een kleine gemeenschap Kethel geheten. Vroeger was het een dorpje op zich, maar in 1941 werd het geannexeerd door Schiedam. Ik ben er nu twee keer geweest, maar allebei de keren voelde het alsof je in een andere wereld stapte. Een van lang vervlogen tijden. In het midden van het dorpje staat een laat gotische kerk, waarvan het oudste gedeelte stamt uit 1300. In 1630 kreeg de kerk het uiterlijk dat jullie op de foto's zien. Gisteren had ik in het kerkje, dat je kan huren voor speciale gelegenheden, een oefendag met mijn koor. Het was een heerlijke dag vol muziek, lekker eten, plezier, gezelligheid en sneeuw!

In the north of Schiedam lies, hidden behind huge apartment buildings and modern houses, a tiny community called Kethel. It is very old. The church, which is in the heart of the village, dates back to 1300 (bottom part). The church as you can see it on my photo's, dates back to 1630. I have been there twice now, but each time it felt very special. It is as if you step back in time. To a Holland of long ago. Yesterday I had a rehearsal day in the church with the choir I sing in. We sing all kind of songs, from The Beatles to Mozart. It was a lovely day full of music, fun, laughter, delicious food and snow! 

 

Knives, forks, spoons & flowers

Tijdens zo'n grijze januaridag als vandaag heb ik ernstig behoefte aan kleur. Kennen jullie dat gevoel? Al struinend op het internet kwam ik deze mooie foto's tegen, in prachtige pasteltinten. Daar word je toch meteen vrolijk van?!

Het aantal reacties op mijn Giveaway overtreft mijn stoutste verwachtingen! Ik had niet gedacht dat zoveel van jullie zouden reageren. Lieve meiden, wat leuk dat jullie meedoen! Op 3 februari, de verjaardag van mijn vader, maak ik de winnaar bekend!
 

In Holland January days are often grey and cold. They make me long for sun and colour! Do you recognise the feeling? While searching the internet I came upon these beautiful photographs in pastel colours. They brightened up my day!!

I can't tell you how surprised I was with the number of comments on my Giveaway. It came totally unexpected! Thank you all!! On the 3rd of February, my fathers birthday, I will announce the winner. My youngest daughter is already looking forward to picking the winning number!

Giveaway!

Eigenlijk was ik van plan om met de Giveaway te wachten tot mijn 100e volger zich had aangemeld, maar vandaag had ik zo iets van: waarom persé wachten tot dan, terwijl ik het veel leuker vind om het nu al te doen!! Via deze Giveaway wil ik jullie allemaal bedanken voor de lieve, leuke, gekke en vrolijke berichtjes die jullie achterlaten op mijn blog. Ik geniet er ernorm van! Ook volgers die nooit een berichtje achterlaten, maar wel iedere keer een kijkje nemen worden van harte uitgenodigd om mee te doen. Het maakt niet uit of je uit Nederland komt of uit het buitenland. Ik stuur het pakje overal naar toe.

Het enige dat je hoeft te doen is een berichtje achter te laten op mijn blog. In het berichtje geef je aan dat je mee wilt meedoen met mijn Giveaway.

De Giveaway bestaat uit een prachtig Engelstalig interieurboek 'Simply Country' (foto 1 t/m 7), een handgeborduurd zakje (foto 8 & 9  ) en een tas van Cath Kidston (foto 10 ).

Op 3 februari maak ik bekend wie de winnaar is. Een van mijn dochters verzorgt de trekking. Tot die tijd, duimen maar!!

Gisteren ontving ik van Desde Mi Ventana een Award. Lieve DMV ontzettend bedankt! Ook al ben ik niet zo van de awards, toch vind ik het ontzettend lief dat je aan mij hebt gedacht. Ik geniet ook iedere keer weer van jouw blog en kan iedereen dan ook aanraden er een kijkje te nemen!

Garlic and catkins

In onze tuin lijkt het alsof alles tot rust is gekomen, maar niets in minder waar. In de kas staat de mimosa (van onze buurtjes) bijna in bloei, de eerste katjes hangen aan de takken van de hazelaar en de knoflook die ik in de herfst heb geplant groeit stug door. Nu de vorst tijdelijk weg is zijn mijn man en ik druk bezig met het uitdunnen van de bomen die in onze tuin staan. Het is een flinke klus, maar noodzakelijk. Wanneer we er niets aan doen is er van de zomer te weinig licht in onze tuin. We hebben nog maar twee bomen gesnoeid, maar het lijkt en voelt alsof het er vijf waren! Onze tuin ligt vol met takken en ik heb flinke spierpijn ;-)

Mijn man heeft de inhoud van één compostbak uitgestrooid over de potager. Op de foto's kunnen jullie goed zien hoe het er zonder beplanting uitziet. Alleen de kruiden (rozemarijn & salie), de aarbeien en de knoflook (diverse soorten) staan er nog. Bij de Intratuin heb ik onlangs weer zaden gekocht;Verbena bonariensis Purple top (ik geloof dat de Hollandse naam IJzerhard is), Juffertje in het groen en kattesnorren. Nu nog even wachten tot eind februari/maart, zodat ik in huis kan gaan voorzaaien. Ik verheug mij en nu al op!

It looks as if all the plants and trees in our garden have taken a rest, but it is quite deceptive. In the hothouse the mimosa (my neighbours) is almost in bloom, the garlic which I planted in September is still growing strong and the Hazel tree does already have catkins on its branches. Now that the frost is temporarily out of the country my husband and I are busy thinning out the trees in our garden. It is a tough, but necessary job. If we don't do anything about it now, we will have very little sun left in our garden in summer. At the moment the garden is full of branches, and my muscles ache ;-)!

My husband put the contents of one of the compost heaps into the potager. On the pictures you can see how it looks like without plants. The only plants which are left in the potager are herbs, like rosemary and sage, the garlic (different types) and some strawberry plants. This week I bought some more seed; Cats Whiskers (colour fountain mixed), Love in a Mist (Miss Jekyll) and Verbena Purple top. I will just have to be patient now and wait for the end of February, before I can start sowing indoors!

Magazines, flowers and a green enamel jar

Wat bof ik toch enorm! Toen ik vrijdagmiddag laat thuis kwam van twee trainingsdagen op de hei, lagen er twee verassingen op mij te wachten; een emaille kan en beker met een lief zelfgemaakt grijs hartje van Anja van Sofies Haus en drie prachtige Amerikaanse tijdschriften; twee 'Victoria Magazines' en één 'Gardening Live' van Carolyn van Aiken House and Gardens. De pakjes kwamen op het juiste moment. Na zo'n intensieve training was het precies wat ik nodig had. Dank jullie wel lieve meiden! Ik kan jullie trouwens aanraden een kijkje te nemen op hun blogs! De link heb ik hierboven in de tekst aangemaakt!

Op zaterdagochtend ben ik naar de markt geweest om bloemen te halen voor in de kan. Met het resultaat ben ik erg blij! In de lente gaat de kan mee naar onze tuin. In de tussentijd genieten we er thuis nog even van. Een fijne zondag allemaal!

When I arrived home on Friday after an intensive two day training course for my work, a big surprise awaited me. Two parcels lay on the table. One parcel was sent by Anja from Sofies Haus, containing a beautiful green enamel jar, a matching mug and a very sweet handmade grey heart. The other parcel came all the way from Prince Edward Island in Canada and was sent by Carolyn from Aiken House & Gardens, containing Victoria magazines and a garden magazine. The garden magazine contained an article on Carolyn's beautiful garden. Have you seen her garden yet? Not only her garden is like a dream, her house and collection of china as well. Please take a look at her blog! The same can be said of Anja's blog 'Sofies Haus', which is very inspiring. Anja makes all kind of beautiful things, which she sells in her shop. Thank you so much, dear ladies, your parcels and gifts came at just the right time!!

I went to the market yesterday to buy some flowers for in the new jar. Doesn't it look pretty? I was desperately in need of some bright pink :-) When spring comes the jar will go with us to our garden. In the meantime we just enjoy it at home. I wish you all a happy Sunday!
