Whenever I meet someone, and they ask me what I enjoy doing, I tell them that, besides my other pastimes, I am a enthusiastic cook and baker, they often reply: 'how lucky your family is'......... I am not so sure about that..... I don't think 'lucky' is the right word.
In today's post unfortunate and sticky are much more appropriate. I think I may have already told you, but to improve my baking skills, I did a patisserie course recently. I took some memorable bakes home, like shoe buns, a brioche, chocolate florentines and a hazelnut meringue pie, but the delicacy that will forever be 'stuck in our heads', is the nougat I made.
I have to say that it looked really good, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the taste (lots of nuts and blueberries inside), but what I hadn't foreseen was that it would be so incredibly sticky. I didn't dare eat it, afraid one of my crowns would end up in there. I decided to just leave it on the kitchen table.
When I came home from choir rehearsal later that evening, I was met by my youngest daughter. She was mildly upset, but on the verge of laughter as well, as one can sometimes be. When trying to take a bite of one of the nougat cubes, it got stuck on her lips. You can probably guess what happened. When she tried to remove the nougat, she pulled part of the top layers of her lips with it....
I cannot tell you how horrible I felt.....My daughter is ok now, so please don't worry, but no more home made nougat for me and no recipe for you. Sorry!
Have a fun week!
Love,
Madelief x
* Thank you for you comments on last weeks post! They made me realise what a sissy I am. You are all much braver :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEen fijne week, Madelief! Veel liefs, Ingrid
When I saw the nougat I thought yum yum, but you are right. I went to the dentist yesterday, and nougat would be a no, no, dental work is so expensive these day. I returned home with my purse quite a lot thinner.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat gorgeous photos. Would love to try the nougatine. Perhaps a tiny bite?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe last photo says it all! Thank you for the good laugh - I'm sure we've all got a cooking/baking story to compare. I would like to be able to make fudge, but so far have only accomplished the creation of something very rock-like.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh, that made me smile!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe story of your nougat made me chuckle!I love the blue and white china, you take such lovely colourful photographs.Thankyou for sharing.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe last photo is very telling about the adhesive material of your nougats ! lol :-) They can't be eaten, but they are certainly tasty. it remains only to admire them :-) It's a funny cooking story, but I hope your daughter is fully recovered from the mishap now.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI wish you a nice new week, Madelief
Hugs
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHaha your last photo did make me smile Madelief, what a shame, it really did look good!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Madelief,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh, it only makes us appreciate even more the 'perfect' and often very expensive nougat we can buy from Spain and/or Italy where they know how to save a crown and without peeling off one's lips...
To everything there is a learning curve and we only do that by making mistakes and by asking and than repeating until it becomes second nature and turns out perfect each time.
But so often we have to give up on that and leave it to the professionals!
Sorry for your daughter as it for sure was painful...
Your photos look absolutely stunning with the Delft blue porcelain and the tulips.
The last photo was not needed as we believe you for 100% anyway.
Hugs,
Mariette
Madelief, your tale of the sticky nougat was very, very funny. I am glad that your daughter has now recovered from her sudden encounter. Who could imagine needing to post a safety warning on a beautiful plate of tempting nougat?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYour blue and white china is just the mixture that I enjoy seeing together. Really lovely!
While I was working this weekend, the NYC weather was quite warm...about 15 C, strange for February. When other folks end their weekend free days tomorrow and return to work, I will have the day off, and hope to take a stroll in Central Park to see what plants might already welcoming spring.
xo
Hello Madelief
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI read your post with amusement. Happy to hear no dentist or doctor visit was required from eating the nougat. How adventurous of you to try baking nougat. You are brave. Wishing you a wonderful week
Helen xx
What a funny story even if your daughter didn't think so! I broke a crown on a Brazil nut! No fun!
BeantwoordenVerwijderen((hugs)), Teresa :-)
Oh but they look so delicious, as do your photos. Especially love the last photo!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a shame about the nougat Madelief, your poor daughter !! ..... BUT, I did have to laugh at the last photograph !!!!! .... I guess not everything we make turns out perfectly .... such is the reality of life !!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful Spring flowers ..... it won't be long now !! XXXX
I know I shouldn't laugh Madelief, but I did! Perhaps it was in sympathy, because that's how my baking ends up. I do love to bake, but the bears are only happiest with the basics. Mainly rocky road and brownies. Always a winner, but whenever I try to spice it up a bit and try something new, it's only me who ends up eating it all. I felt like I could not just be the one to scoff so much, so I stopped baking. I made noughat, which was nice, but streuth, it took forever to chew, and like you, I feared for my teeth!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNever mind, we learn don't we?!!!!!!
Have a beautiful rest of a week!
Vanessa x
Oh, my goodness that is so funny ... sorry!! Have a lovely week ... maybe make some cake instead! M xx
What beautiful photos of the red tulips in the blue and white dishes. One of my very favorite looks. Your story made me smile! I used to love nougat and caramel, but alas, I cannot manage that chewiness any more, and I would certainly have pulled some dental work off my teeth! Glad your daughter is okay.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWel een heel grappig verhaal! Groetjes, Hetty
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSo beautiful - and delicious too! Love that little Dutch couple, Madelief. x
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh Madelief, that last photo is worth a thousand words....IT'S STICKY FOR SURE! Oh your dear daughter! I totally understand. I tried to make some French MENDIANTS for Christmas one year and my poor husband ate them but they were hard as rock. There are just some secret recipes that I must leave to the professionals!!!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI'm laughing with you. The last photo tells all! Glad your daughter is okay. Not everything turns out all the time!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA good sense of humor takes us a longways doesn't it? Bleeding lips and all. The red tulips also add a wonderfully cheerfulness. I love them. Keep on baking. Sounds like a wonderful adventure.
Fijne avond
Liefs
Oh dear your poor daughter! Mine would have done the same and helped herself, she is glad that you didn't share the recipe too! Sarah x
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh and I was hoping for a recipe. I love nougat and they are so pretty in your photos.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOh no! Poor thing! It looks so pretty - too bad! I hope the pretty flowers cheered her up! x Karen
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGreetings! Good to know that your daughter is alright now. I have eaten nougats before and I was hoping for a recipe. But your nougats look so good and pretty on the plate.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenGorgeous pictures....such a shame the nougat proved to be too sticky....it looks so pretty and so delicious!! Love all the flowers and china you put together to show the sticky nougat with. So glad your daughter is ok now x
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWishing you a happy sunny week.

That's hilarious Madelief!!! I could use a good recipe for superglue (do you have one I could use :)))))) All kidding aside, they do look yummy though. Especially on that beautiful plate.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI have to tell you that your dishes and china just make me want to sing! So many amazing colors and patterns. Whenever I come for a visit here, I always leave in such a good mood.
sending hugs...
Hello dear Madelief, oh what a funny story, before I read the end of the blog I was thinking oooh yummy, must get this recipe because we all love nougat in our home, but I guess we'll forgive you for not sharing this one haha! Your photography and your styling is simply BEAUTIFUL! love it all. Enjoy the weekend! Sharon x
