Stop and smell the roses

If you like to find satisfaction in life, it is said that you have to acknowledge the value and meaning of simple things, like stopping on your garden path to smell the roses, and admire the beauty of the flowers, standing proudly or tumbling down the trees, like a waterfall of flowers.

Perhaps I am a hopeless romantic, but I try to do just that, to take it all in as much as possible. It's only two weeks that the roses in my garden are at their best, and that's not long.

When I was in the garden today, the rambling roses (Veilchenblau & Paul's Himalayan Musk) are already losing their petals and delicious scent. Last weeks rain speeded things up considerably. They both gave an abundant display of flowers. Paul's Himalayan musk has taken over one of the trees in the middle part of my garden completely. It's breathtakingly beautiful.

The roses in front of my garden house: New Dawn, Rhapsody in Blue and Pink cloud, are still in flower. In the back a simple dog rose, I once took a cutting from when on a walk, and some roses I bought for a Euro in a dump store, look magnificent.

In other parts of the garden, Belinda's dream, Constance Spry, Waltz Time, Heritage and Leonardo da Vinci make me smile. How elegant they look.

My experience is that working in a garden does not only have physical benefits, it heals, clears the head, gives you the peace and quiet that you need, and makes you appreciate simple things more. Above all, it makes me a happier person. I can recommend it to you all.

Stop and smell the roses.

Wishing you a lovely week!

Madelief x

  6. The flowers are so fleeting, aren't they.. the rains came and knocked down my lilacs.. but I know we need the rain. Oh well.. summer is coming back here.. after some cold grey weeks. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  7. Your images are balm for the spirit. It's good to stop to smell the roses (and my most recent post, from last week had a similar title!). The roses around your allotment cottage are simply beautiful. Our roses here are blooming like never before. We haven't had any rain to knock them down or dislodge petals, so are still enjoying wonderful perfume and colour.

    Lieve groet, MJ

  9. Just beautiful, I'm late to appreciating roses. I'm a little afraid of them, their sharp thorns and my lack of knowledge on pruning. Last year I bought two, this year three, and I'm utterly in love, and yes, I walk down the garden just to smell them. I think there will be more in my garden over the years to come :) xxx

  10. Dat doe ik ook hoor, maar met de regen van vandaag is er niet veel geur te bespeuren! We houden de moed erin, na regen komt zonneschijn. Groetjes Hetty

  13. You and I both dearest Madelief; we are hopeless but HOPEFUL romantics. Yesterday, my husband bought me a pink rose CLIMBER that we are planting today over an arbor in our garden that has been bare for at least 15 years. Just sitting in its pot waiting to be planted, this rose climber has made a difference in the appearance of the garden. And stopping to smell the roses in life is true living, true acceptance of both beautiful and unattractive, in order to really appreciate what is around us. HAVE FUN!

  20. Madelief I so agree with what you are saying. It's the small simple pleasures in life that give us the most joy. Your roses look magnificent, I bet they smell heavenly too. We've had so much rain this past week, but fortunately I staked my roses so they didn't bend with the heaviness of the rain on the delicate petals. Have a lovely week.

  22. Dearest Madelief,
You for sure are not a hopeless romantic and I'm with you all the way. It is so very rewarding and it really does calm the mind and spirit and we also indulge in its beauty and fragrance.
Even on our bikes we inhaled the special smell of the fields, where the wheat already has been harvested. The birds chatter and it makes us so very calm and happy. That creates sweet dreams as well.
Your photos are poetry in itself!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  27. It's been so wet here over the past week I haven't had much of a chance to smell our roses and the rain as damaged some too. My garden is my sanctuary too and gives me so much more than the effort I put in looking after it. Sarah x

  31. It's impossible to chose a favourite flower but if I really had to, it would be the rose. I spent time earlier this week in a lovely garden in East Sussex for their rose week and spending an afternoon literally smelling the roses was bliss!

  32. Your garden thrives, looking gorgeous. I quite agree that taking time to smell the roses brings balance to life. Gardening can renew my outlook, but I have to admit that the mood can easily be ruined if I have let the weeds get the best of me. wonderful photos.
