Hidcote manor gardens

It feels like ages since we visited Hidcote gardens near Chipping Camden in The Cotswolds, but it was only three months ago. Our two youngest daughters, who are twenty and eighteen years old, joined us. The attraction of a croquet set on the lawn and a tennis court they could use, was hard to resist. So while my husband and I enjoyed the impressive gardens at leisure, our two daughters were working up a sweat.

I loved Hidcote! It is one of the best gardens I have seen so far. It was originally made by Lawrence Johnston, an American garden enthusiast, in the Arts and Crafts style. Yew, holly & beech hedges define a series of garden rooms, like the white garden and fuchsia garden. There are fountains, a lovely folly with beautiful murals, a kitchen garden, a meadow of wild flowers and amazing views over the Vale of Evesham. When you haven't visited yet, you should. I think I may even prefer it over Sissinghurst! I came home with lots of ideas for planting schemes.

Which garden impressed you most?

Happpy weekend!

LOVE,

Madelief x

  1. Prachtig, je foto's weer. Wat een mooie tuin om te bezoeken. Sowieso is het erg mooi in de Cotswolds. Lang geleden bezocht ik de tuinen van Mien Ruysch, die vond ik erg mooi. Fijn weekend, groetjes, Gerda

  12. Madelief, I do hope to see that garden for myself some day...perhaps late springtime would be the best time?

That last contemporary photo of your daughters at the croquet competition is marvelous...the perfect accent.

You know that I also have a collection of old china, but yours puts mine to shame. Every stack of brilliant luminous china cups you show us is better than its predecessors.

  21. Dear Madelief - I am feeling nostalgic for the summer that is now gone. The patchwork of colour from the flowers, the soft mellowness of the Cotswold stone, and the magic that is Hidcote. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your trip to this enchanting garden.

  63. I love this post, Madelief... but just quickly.... ;)

I cannot even imagine what it must be like to be there in reality. I'll bet that the pictures - even though they're just beautiful - don't even really catch it quite.

That is so funny... it looks like an exciting game of croquet!!! =D

and, that palette of pots, etc.... what's that for? Birds, perhaps? It's really beautiful!

Love to you.... the choir concert is this Sat and Sun - we stood for the whole three hour rehearsal, last night.... I'm off for a nap! Yawn!!! Not even Dear Earl Gray can seem to cure me, today! =/

  69. Hi dear Madelief,
oh I love Hidcote Manor Gardens.... I see you have had beautiful weather. As we visit the gardens years ago in June, we had rain and only 10 degrees!!! But anyhow it was a great visit. As we go back to our Hotel in Burford(!) the fire was burning in the fireside and we had "cream tea", that was a little compensation for the weather.
Wonderful pics, I 've forgotten to say!
    Lieve groetjes
    Bine

    Groeten, Janneke
