Summer flowers

It was a dark and rainy day when I visited the allotment for the first time after our holiday. My sweet neighbours at the allotment complex took care of our garden. They did a good job. It all looked beautiful.

Although there is some colour in the garden, there are not as many summer flowers as usual. Several phlox are in flower, hydrangea, gladioli and achillea, but that's about it.  I almost forget the dahlia's. The flowers of the dahlia tubbers I left in the ground over winter, have opened as well. I planted some new Dahlia varieties this year, but their flowers are not visible yet. I am still waiting for the Zinnia's and Cosmos I seeded too. With a bit of luck, the best is yet to come.

Meanwhile my fruit and vegetables are doing splendidly. I have never had so many bunches of grapes before, and my plum tree is loaded. I made three pots of chutney already, but the basket I keep the plums in is still half full. And there is even more fruit on the tree....

The greenhouse provides us with a bumper crop of tomatoes. So that's going to be tomato soup and lots of tomato salad the coming days.

I want to thank you too for leaving such sweet comments on last weeks post. I haven't replied all of them yet, as I am still enjoying the last days of the girls summer vacation. We try to make the most of it.

Next week I will show you some photo's of the small dinner party I had in the garden today.

Have a lovely new week!

Madelief x

  1. Hallo lieve Madelief!

  5. Summer's bounty is such a treat - year after year it continues to amaze me. Your garden is looking lovely, despite your fear that the summer flowers aren't as plentiful as they might be. You are so lucky to have good neighbours who take care of things while you are away - I have a feeling that they might just feel like that about you too!

  12. Madelief, the contrast of those beautifully brilliant august flowers and the cool green grape vines is really lovely. I've seen lots of zinnias for sale at recent farmers market visits, and am always reminded of the zinnias in my parents' garden. it was fun as a child to have the "task" of clipping a selection of those colors to bring inside for an arrangement. Thanks for this nice memory. xo

  17. Maybe it is a little overcast, but the light makes all your colours of the fruits and flowers just pop! I'm glad that you are enjoying your time with your girls. I am too. I will say goodbye to my oldest daughter who is off to university for her second year. Being Canada- it is very far away. We are on the westcoast and she is heading east - four time zones away. She will be back at Christmas. In the meantime, we still have some days at home and can enjoy dinner in the garden.

  18. Dearest Madelief,
Wow, love those final photos as it is such a different sight from your garden. I can't recall ever having seen her plums and grapes...
Your love will be smiling down from heaven by looking at such a feast.
Funny that we want to grow and EAT our crops and thereby eating it for days on end... But we don't complain about it; don't we?!
    Lovely flowers as well.
We were ready to go biking after our afternoon tea but thunder and rain is keeping us off. Hope we still can paddle...
    Sending you hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Thank you for your sweet compliment Maria. I planted a Cafe au Lait dahlia in my garden as well. I am happy to hear it will flower later in the autumn. I was afraid it wouldn't flower at all :-)

  22. Your summer garden is beautiful. I love the abundance of summer. My plums are overwhelming me, but they are almost all picked. There are grapes the birds and squirrels might get if I don't pick them soon. Then come figs, but apples I bought today. Whew!

  29. When you say, 'and that's it', I'm thinking but that's a lot!!! You have such an amazing garden full of color Madelief en wat heerlijk al die verschillende dahlia's.

  31. Beautiful red flowers. The table looks lovely. A great way to end the summer. And look at those grapes! I dug out our grape; it was just too unruly and only produced once. Our tomatoes failed this year. We don't know why. The heat usually doesn't bother them much, but hail did a lot of damage to them. Yours look great. I always enjoy a visit to your garden.
