Spring idyll

What a delightful weekend we had in Rotterdam. The sunshine and high temperatures made it feel like summer.
The flowers in my garden seem to like the warmth and humidity. They thrive. Somehow they all seem to be in flower at the same time too.

In the middle part of the garden, which is quite shady, the rhododendrons, geraniums and Salomon's seal are in flower. In front of the garden house and along the garden path, the first roses steal the show. Foxgloves pop up everywhere. It's a spring idyll.

My middle daughter and I spent great part of the weekend at our allotment. It makes me happy to see how much she enjoys gardening. We cut the box hedging, mowed the lawn and did some weeding. With a heavy heart I decided to get rid of the lupins. They were covered in aphids, which caused the plants to wilt.

In between the heavy work, I found some time to plant sweet peas and sow Cosmos.

Next weekend I won't be able to post. Friends and I will be on a short holiday in the Lake District (UK). If you have any suggestions of special places to visit, I would love to hear.

Have a good two weeks. Will be back soon.

Love, Madelief x

* The dress on the above photo's  is a vintage one. I am not sure of the period, but it's beautiful.

* The purple rose on my photo's is called Rhapsody in blue, the lilac one Indigoletta and the bright pink ones: Pink Cloud and Tom Tom.

  3. I really enjoyed seeing your garden in such lushness! Your weather must be very similar to ours here in Oregon, USA.. the Columbia River Gorge area. You are so pretty in your vintage dress. I would love to be so trim as you are. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  7. Hawkshead would be a good visit, nearby is Beatrix Potter's house which I am visiting myself later in the year. Have a wonderful time. Shame about the aphids.

  8. What a shame about the lupins which I love - I am off to the Lake District too but next month. Like Wood Fairy I would also suggest Beatrix Potter's house "Hill Top" they are celebrating what would have been her 150th birthday year this July, so a very good time to visit.

  18. Madelief, your garden is more beautiful every year. I am sorry to read about the loss of the lupins, but I am sure you are taking the proper action.
I'm also sure that you'll have a grand time in the Lakes. I have yet to visit there myself, but one of my original blogging friends, Milly, writes a beautiful blog Drawings From Nature about the area and how it inspires her gorgeous drawing and painting. I highly recommend your having a look at her site. xo

  22. Dearest Madelief,
You managed to create again a lovely setting with this enormous outburst of blooms in your garden!
And that dress you wear with it; like all coming together. Great styling and selection for what to wear.
Enjoy your upcoming trip. Presuming you visit England again, even if you did not mention the country...
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  26. The garden is wonderful. I love all of the pinks. Speaking of aphids, I had a snowball bush full of aphids, causing the leaves to be curled and deformed. From the bathroom window, I could little warblers, sparrows, and even orioles feeding on the bugs. The bush has remain aphid free, but this year I am noticing a few more curled leaves. I hope the bugs don't find the newly planted near by roses. If you go to Grassmere, it is the home of poet William Wadsworth. There are two houses there, his original house Dove Cottage and then once he gained his fortune and fame his big house Royal Mounte. He was England Poet Laureate 1843-1850. You can take short walking trail through the woods from one house to the next. Both have rich beautiful gardens. Wordsworth was also a passionate gardener. So you visit as an admirer of his poetry or to see his gardens or both. I have been so lucky to have visited his homes twice and would return again. Next time without the burden of a tour schedule on a bus with university students, alone so that I could linger and reflect. I wish could I share tales of the walking paths in the Lake District, but I can't. You will have a lovely time and we would love to enjoy it too. Bring back lots of photos.

Hill Top is well worth a visit (the home of Beatrix Potter) that is the one place that stands out in my mind. The whole place in general is just beautiful though, especially if the weather is nice. I hope you have a wonderful time x x
