Hooked !

Hooked, that's what I am, completely hooked to crochet :-) The last couple of evenings were spent on the couch, with pastel coloured yarn around me and a crocheting needle in my hand.

I recently bought a book, 100 snowflakes to crochet, which I quite enjoy. Some flakes look more like a doily, but that is probably because I am a relatively new to crochet and don't know the right stitches and patterns yet. I wish my grandmother could see me. She would have loved it!!

Finally my granny square plaid is looking the way I want to :-). I used the slip stitch to crochet the granny squares together, which worked very well. I still have a long way to go, but I can already drape the plaid over a couch or bed. Hurray!

In between work and crochet, I visited several thrift shops in and around Rotterdam. My eldest daughter, who moved out last week, was in need of some furniture and home ware. When you live on a student budget, the thrift store is the place to go. She found some lovely glassware, vases and a sweet little cupboard from the seventies.

Off course my eyes were drawn to a collection of floral teacups :-). They are so very very pretty! The soft winter light shining on the tiny pastel coloured roses, makes them look magical!

Do you have any plans for this weekend? When you live in an around Rotterdam, I can recommend the exhibition 'The road to Van Eyck' in the Boymans van Beuningen. It shows paintings of the low countries in the early Middle Ages. The exhibition is quite unique, because the paintings on display are the only ones that survived from this period. Most of the works have an eclectic theme. I thought I would not like it, but I was wrong. It's amazing to see how the use of colour and the way to paint 'light' evolved. The exhibition is on until the 10th of February.

Tomorrow my youngest daughter and I will be doing some DIY. More about that soon.

Love from a cold and (snow) white Holland!

  6. Lieve Madelief,
Zij was zó verguld. Achter haar staan en met mijn armen om haar heen, vóór haar precies voor doen deed vlot en goed navolgen.
Zeg, die tentoonstelling zou ik maar wát graag zien in Rotterdam! http://www.boijmans.nl/en

  16. This is an exquisite post, Madelief for many reasons. First things first, I LOVE Northern European Medieval and Renaissance paintings with a passions. Those elongated figures, often, and the details of the landscape. I studied the Middle Ages for my Masters and I will always have a soft spot for this vast period.

Now, onto your crochet. Isn't that pale blue heavenly? I cannot for the life of my crochet and I would dearly love to one day. I like the image of your surrounded by yarn on your sofa. It's good escapism, don't you think?

Last but not least. Those teacups are deligthful.

Warmest wishes from France. We are still waiting for snow; have you had any yet?

  25. Life sounds wonderfully cozy! =] I wish that it would snow again, here! Your snow white Holland sounds BEAUTIFUL!

It's funny, but, I'm enjoying winter - being inside and warm and homey. There's lots of time to dream, at the moment and I'm just a bit worried that spring will come early again this year and make me need to scramble outside before things are done here. But, would you remind me again in March that I didn't want winter to end too soon?!!! =/

I've been loving the pretty purple and gray crocheted blankets on Pinterest - just like yours! =] Yours is in the very same vein - it's so pretty! It looks and sounds like a very soothing and quietening occupation. It's tempting me to start yet another thing... I've been trying to read Sherlock Holmes at night but I'm a bit, too, tired and brainless - this looks better! ;)

Your adventures in helping your daughter 'make home' sounds like precious, wonderful time spent! =] It's reminding me of time I spent with my mother in back in 'the day'. =]

and, finally, about the museum exhibit.... I wanted go out and around and explore and have adventures, this past summer but, with the drought and complications from that, we wound up sticking really close to home. Now, we have two vehicles and I have a new found freedom that's making me start dream.... where do I want to go and explore?! The museum in Williams' town sounds good! =] However, your exhibit sounds very interesting!!! I've loved to explore and observe light since I was a very young girl and, now, my camera is just another excuse to do the same! =] So, the exhibition sounds fascinating! and, speaking of observing light... just today, I was noticing how pretty the soft the winter light was on some china I had out and the gold rims were softly glowing and twinkly. It sounds like you saw the very same thing in your cups, today! ;) =]

Love, love, love to you and your family, dear Madelief! =]

  39. Hello Madelief:
We can well imagine the fun that you and your eldest daughter had scouring the thrift shops for goodies. And, you sound to have found a number of wonderful things for her to start decorating her new home. Of course, your own treasures, the teacups and saucers are delightful. You always seem to spot the most wonderful things!

How clever you are to be able to decipher those unintelligible instructions into those lovely crochet items. The pastel shades are so delicate and match the intricacy of the designs. By next Christmas, you will clearly have a blizzard of snowflakes with which to decorate your house. How wonderful!!!

We do so hope that you are enjoying a relaxing weekend in the warm watching the snow fall. It is absolutely arctic here in Budapest so we do not venture out very much.Keep warm and take care, love to you all, J and L xx

  48. Madelief, I've really enjoyed reading this post and seeing the beautiful accompanying photos...hard to decide where to begin with my comments!

The tea cups are terrific, and it's difficult for me to imagine finding them in a thrift shop. It would be very unlikely to find such treasures in a NYC thrift shop, but I do still do some occasional foraging.

You chose wonderful colors for your crocheted quilt and the new snowflakes. I have a book by Erika Knight called Crochet Stitch Motifs, that includes 250 (!) motifs, some of which might be considered snowflake images. It's fun to experiment with colors and different thicknesses of yarn in testing out these motifs. I do think of crochet as a great way to play with color...much quicker than knitting, though it does gobble up yarn.

How I would love to see that exhibit. I am always intrigued by differing light in various parts of the world, at various times of the year. To be able to see what painters saw so long ago is a double treat.

No snow here as yet, but we might just receive a flurry tomorrow afternoon. xo
