The first spring flowers

Some of you asked me to post a few photo's I made at the photography course last week. I had a good look at them, but somehow I don't find them interesting enough to share with you. What I did instead, is cycle to my allotment garden and take some photo's there. Keeping in mind the things I learned at the course. Hope you can see the difference :-).

The garden looks beautiful! Although it's still bare, there is so much to see. The tiny white heads of the snowdrops lighten up a dark corner. There are crocuses everywhere. However best of all are the hellebores, under the old hazel tree. They look truly magnificent. I only have two varieties in the garden at the moment, since I lost my white hellebores, but the ones I have are very pretty! When I stand in the middle of the garden and look around me, I can see all sort of shoots begin to emerge: daffodils, tulips, bluebells and even the first aliums.

The early morning light in our south facing garden is enchanting, on this sunny winter day. I had to contain myself, not to prune the roses yet, or get rid of the thick layer of mulch, which I covered the Dahlia bulbs with. A colder period is still possible, and the risk of frost and ice, which can play havoc with my garden.  I hope the weather will stay the way it is: mild for the time of year and sometimes even spring like. Can't wait to pull on my boots and start planting and seeding.

Have you been working in the garden lately?

Love,

Madelief x

I made the photo of the windmill, which is close to our garden, especially for Noelle. Noelle, here it is at last :-)! x

  7. Oh lovely Madelief, the helebores are absolutely beautiful, amazing that such a beautiful flower can survive the bleakest winter ...

I adore your summerhouse, even in this cold weather, I am imagining it on a bright, sunny summer's day, with the table all set in front of it and a large pitcher of Pimms's ... bliss!

Thanks for popping over to me and for your lovely words, you're always very welcome!

  8. Lieve Madelief,

  16. Good morning, Madelief! I am so amazed that my Dutch friends are having such a mild winter, with signs of spring, already! We are quite the opposite here, with freezing temperatures still biting at our noses! Your snowdrops, MY GOODNESS! Madelief, your garden cottage is so beautiful, and I remember it from last year. How I enjoyed your tea parties there, and I look forward to one again! We have a lovely enclosed patio that leads out into our garden where we can watch the rabbits, see the squirrels and hear the birds. I look forward to it!

As always, your photos are stunning and the contrast of the mint green with the purple flower is POWERFUL! I am taking more photographs of my own now, and enjoying it all!

Thank you for your lovely inspiration, Madelief. Bisous, Anita

  36. Ja!

  37. I love your photographs and how fun to see the windmill in the background. The bulbs in my garden are at about the same place as yours. I took some of the mulch off one of the beds and I am hoping that this last few days of very cold weather will still be alright for the little bulbs. I can hardly wait for Spring, but since I am a planner, I love the anticipation of looking at the ground and seeing what will be, just by seeing what is poking up through the earth.
On another topic, I think it's so exciting that you are planning a crochet workshop in your garden over tea-- I wish I could come! If I didn't live so far away, I would certainly sign up- I think it will be so inspiring and cozy- no doubt it will be a great success!

  80. Oh, my GOODNESS!!! This is all so beautiful!! =) xo

Now! How funny! I never knew that there was this ADORABLE, beautiful, magic windmill right on your garden's horizon!! Do you realize how exotic and pretty they are to those of us in other countries, I wonder? They speak 'fairytale' to me and are right up there with french chateaus in my mind! =D

I cannot believe how beautiful your garden looks! Spring!! and, yet, I know what you mean.... it really is still pale winter - which is just as lovely a season.

And, I can tell that there is something different with your photos - I was noticing it before I ever read about the photography class. I can't quite put my finger on it but.... I want to say that there's a change in the composition and depth of your photos. A new view that is very, very charming!! But, you know... your photos are always - ALWAYS - so lovely!!

I LOVE the picture of the snowdrops and, the picture of the windmill over your garden that is being aired out and brought to life, just tells the most wonderful story that makes my heart sing!! So lovely with the still bare branches!! Yes! It all makes my heart sing! And, then... what else is there to say but..... hellebores!!!! LOVE!!! =)
