A country walk

The weather was beautiful yesterday. With two friends I made a walk of the Dutch forest commission in The Betuwe. The route was 15 km long. For an untrained walker like me, it was quite a stroll, but because of the change in scenery I didn't notice this at all. We walked through little villages, wetlands, forests and along the river Linge. It was Holland at its best! The route was full of apple- and peartrees, plums and brambles. Delicious! Fortunately, the muscle ache wasn't as bad today as I thought it would be. If it depends on me, we will make a new walk soon. If you have any suggestions.....please let me know!

A lot of plums

60 gr boter, 2 teentjes knoflook, 2 tlps geraspte verse gember, 2 tlps gemalen komijn, 1 tlp gemalen kardamom, 2 tlps mosterdzaad, 2 grote gele uien in stukjes, 1 kilo pruimen, 2 grote appels in stukjes, 400 gram bruine suiker, 250ml rode wijn en 500ml witte azijn.

Unfortunately our plum tree did not give one plum this year. However, at the market there where more than enough plums and for reasonable prices as well. So we came home with a whole kilo. Together with the onions from our garden it was enough to make chutney with. I used the little cookbook from the Australian magazine Womens Weekly called "Pickles and Chutney's". I must say, I was quite amazed about all the herbs and other ingredients that went inside: 600 gr butter, 2 cloves garlic, 2 tsp fresh grated ginger, 1 tsp ground cardamom, 2 tsp yellow mustard seeds, 2 medium onions, 1 kilo of plums, 2 large apples, 400 gr brown sugar, 250ml red wine and 500ml white vinegar. I found the quantity of liquid a bit too much, especially the vinegar. While preparing it, there was a horrible sour smell in our kitchen....and it took one hour longer to boil. It just didn't get thick! Yesterday evening we opened the pot which was half full and served it, with some trepidation, at dinner. We couldn't be more surprised when we tasted it. It was delicious!! What I have leart is that when something smells awful it can still taste good! So, if you are looking for a delicous chutney recipe I can recommend this one. It's quite easy. The only thing you have to do is put everything in a pan on medium heat, onions, herbs and garlic first. When everything is inside you have to bring it to boil, let it simmer for one and a half hour till thick and pour in sterilised jars. Don't forget, you don't have to cover the pan. You can keep the chutney for 6 months in a cool dark place. By the way, don't forget to open your kitchen window while cooking and close all the doors inside.....

Old villas

It's special to see how many old villas in Normandy are still in perfect condition. Most villas date from the Belle Epoque period. A period which started at the end of the 19th century and came to an end at the beginning of the twentieth. In one of my previous blogs I have shown you some pictures of this period (Deauville). As you know I am a great admirer of art, architecture but also fashion and other artefacts from this period. You can imagine how happy I was being surrounded by so much splendour! In the village 'Houlgate' alone there were about 300 houses from this period. Most of the pictures I put on my blog today I made there. However, the white house with the black shutters is to be found nearby Dieppe.

A romantic day in the park

Yesterday a festival of Romantic music was held in Rotterdam. All through the afternoon and evening there where performances. We left early with our picknickbasket filled to the brim with sandwiches, fruit and fruit juices, to find a good spot on the lawn. Luckily we found just the place nearby one of the stages and a crossroads of paths. It was the ideal spot to enjoy the music and look at the beautiful outfits people where wearing.

Invasion of the pumpkins

I just love pumpkins. I love the big ones, like the Atlantic Giant, which looks so decorative in the fall near the front door, or the dusty orange Butternut pumpkin, that tastes so good in the soup or roasted with Rosemary from the oven. You can imagine how happy I was today when I saw four (!) pumpkins growing in our garden! One of them is a butternut. I thought the seed wasn't stong enough this year, but I was just impatient! The plant is growing lucious, like all the other pumpkin plants in our garden. Their tentacles grow over our gravel paths, through the tomatoes and Dahlias in the direction of our little garden house. It will not be long before our vegetable plot will be completely overgrown ;)! I have to say......those pumpkins grow faster than I thought they would :)! Maybe another month and we can harvest :) The cooking books are already laying on the kitchen table. Ready to use!

Ik vond het boek 'Elegance, the Séeberger brothers and the birth of fashion photography'.

During our holiday in France I read an article in a local newspaper about 'The Séeberger brothers', which captured my attention. Between 1909 and 1975 the brothers and later the sons of one of the brothers made the most beautiful fashion pictures. They worked for famous couturiers like Chanel, Patou and Schiaparelli, newspapers and magazines and circulated in the upper class. At home I started looking for more information and found the book 'Elegance, the Séeberger brothers and the birth of fashion photography. Yesterday it arrived by mail and I am so happy with it! I can recommend it to anyone who loves photography and fashion.

Sea colours

I don't think I need to say much about the pictures I put on my blog today. They probably speak for themselves. While walking through Le Tréport, a seaside town in the north of Normandy, we came upon many beautiful beach houses. I especially liked the facades in aqua colours.
