Romantic garden

May must be my favourite month in the garden. I welcome the little pastel flowers that seem to appear out of nowhere. The huge amount of rain we had must have helped. When I sit on my veranda and look over the garden, I see shades of blue, pink and purple everywhere.

Now that the daffodils have wilted, bluebells, dicentra and the long stems with pretty white bells of Salomon's seal appear. The woodland part of my garden is a joy to look at. It has a sweet smelling carpet of Woodruff, through which Spanish and Grape Hyacinths pop up. It looks absolutely enchanting. The Japanese Cherry tree is in full bloom and spreads it's branches full of pink blossoms over the garden path. It looks very romantic.

It makes me forget that the view at the back of the garden is not what it used to be. The last stable blocks of the equestrian centre have now gone. So has the old 19th century farm. Leaving a building yard with stone and rubble. I hope the lilac tree and clematis I planted along the stream last year will grow fast and hide it all from sight.

Some of today's photo's look a bit hazy, but they were taken on a wet day.

Happy Wednesday.

Madelief x

  1. Hello Madelief:
It is, as you say, absolutely enchanting. We do so agree about gardens in May, surely the loveliest of times and although, as we understand it, there has been so much rain, it has, in all probability, ensured this wonderful freshness.

We are so very saddened to learn of the disappearance of the farm behind you for what would appear to be new building. Such a great pity and we do hope that your new plantings will go some way towards disguising it.

  6. You garden looks beautiful Madelief.....Spring is such a wonderful time of year. We stayed by Vondelpark when we were in Amsterdam and walked through the park everyday. Everything was budding and sprouting fresh green leaves and the blossom and tulips were out. A beautiful time of year to see Amsterdam even though it rained a bit !!....although, we seemed to be in museums or having lunch when it rained so that was fine.
Enjoy your garden and have a lovely week. XXXX

  7. Madelief, the photos are wonderful, I think gardens always look so pretty in the rain.
I have yet to grow Solomons Seal and I'd like to. Are the flowers fragrant?
Woodruff I know very well and the scent is quite beautiful. Even on a rainy day to sit on your verandah with fresh strawberries and tea surely is an absolute delight.

I don't think the flowers of the Solomons Seal are fragrant, but I am not sure. I will check it out this weekend :-)!

  14. Hallo Madelief,

  68. Oh, that is too bad about the old farm gone. Was it very picturesque, in a way? Have you ever heard the song, "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot"? I'm afraid that I'm always struggling with Tom about this. Right now, he wants to tear down the old, beautifully romantic milk house that is supposed to become my potting shed and he wants to build something new. He's torn down and 'cleaned up' all the old vines and lush drooping branches....sigh and weep! In the name of 'improvement'. =/
